Conveniently located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Thibodaux, the Queen City of Bayou Lafourche, retains its southern charm and Cajun hospitality. Beautiful and graceful Bayou Lafourche runs through the downtown area of Thibodaux where the city was founded in 1830. The city is graced by moss-laden oaks, plantation homes and lush fields of sugar cane. A drive down Canal Boulevard offers a look into the past. Antebellum homes dating back to the 19th century line both sides of the highway.
Attractions
Thibodaux offers many sites of interest. Laurel Valley Village, the oldest working sugar cane plantation in the United States attracts visitors from around the world, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Edward Douglas White Home, also listed on the register, was the home of the US Supreme Court Justice of the same name.
The site of the home of Francis T. Nicholls, a former governor of the State of Louisiana, and namesake of Nicholls State University, offers historical significance.
Although not currently open for tours, Rienzi Plantation is one of the most splendid architectural masterpieces in the south.
The Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, located in downtown Thibodaux, is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The cultural center is part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The center, through exhibits and special programs, interprets the history and traditions of the many cultures of the wetlands region.
Its Cajun heritage gives Thibodaux unique appeal. Restaurants serve seafood gumbo, crawfish and jambalaya as standard fare. Weekend festivals and Mardi Gras parades are long-standing traditions, as is the Thibodaux Volunteer Firemen’s Fair and parade, which dates back to 1857. The fair and parade are held annually during the first weekend of May. It is believed that the Thibodaux Volunteer Fire Department is the largest volunteer fire department in the United States.
Thibodaux is only minutes away from the best outdoor recreation that south Louisiana has to offer, including fishing, hunting, boating, golfing and more. Right outside of Thibodaux, you can enjoy entertaining guided swamp tours. Oak Alley, Laura and Madewood Plantations are just a short driving distance from Thibodaux.
The Economy
Thibodaux has a history of high employment levels. Its rich land supports sugar cane farming, manufacturing and the oil industry. Thibodaux employers are also diversified, ranging from small businesses and governmental agencies to professional and technical services.

Educational Opportunities
The presence of Nicholls State University (NSU), the city’s major emloyer, provides Thibodaux with a growing educated and professional population. NSU, an outstanding nationally accredited institution, offers more than 85 undergraduate and graduate degree programs.
A variety of excellent public and private educational opportunities are available from kindergarten through high school.
Thibodaux is also home to the Louisiana Technical College, Lafourche Campus, which provides a number of accredited vocational programs.
Health Care
Thibodaux Regional Medical Center, one of the fastest growing medical facilities in the south, offers highly specialized services including cardiology, cancer care, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics, comprehensive rehabilitation services and much more. TRMC was recently recognized as being in the top 1% of health care facilities in the country in the area of patient satisfaction.
